Digital Ireland - Are we missing out?

I was quite disappointed that when we decided to move to Ireland, there was virtually no information online about the area of the country we were moving to, no chance of even getting a bed and breakfast gift certificate. Thankfully now that we are nearer to Dublin there is a lot more available. I am saddened though that people in the country are not embracing the Internet as their city counterparts have. Of course there are access issues. Sad that in this day and age many people in a thriving country cannot get broadband. But I think people are often wary of the unknown. "Sure what would I need a website for?" When tourism is booming a website can be very profitable for that small B&B owner in Westport or the unique cafe in Connemara. Most people planning on coming to Ireland to visit will start with Google and your site could be there waiting for them.

Some examples of my favourite Irish websites that have really caught on:

http://www.sulmeat.com/ - This is an online butcher. He is wonderful the meat is delivered to your door the next day all individually wrapped and labeled. The prices are unbeatable and if you order €100 or more delivery is free. I just love the meat I've ordered and have recommended them to many people who were equally impressed!

http://www.orchardorganics.com/ - This is an organic produce company. They will deliver organic fruit and veg as well as other products to your door. Again I find the pricing very reasonable for the fresh produce.

http://www.pigsback.com/ - If you haven't been here yet you are really missing out. Having only been a member for a year I have amassed well over €200 worth of "piggy points" which I have traded in for video rental gift certificates, A-Wear gift certificates and most recently a gift certificate to Brazilia waxing studio in Dublin along with many other smaller items. They offer great savings and incentives for people all over the country

http://www.magicmum.com/ - This is a website for mothers. It is forum based and you can get advice and discuss just about anything! I have gotten great tips on here from which doctor to visit to the best hairdresser in Newbridge!

http://www.rollercoaster.ie/ - Another parenting site offering advice and articles. Some good competitions. Forums are a bit archaic, but a good site all in all.

http://www.takeawayfood.ie/ - A great concept, this website lists all your local takeaways from Indian to Italian to Chinese to the chipper. They have menus posted and all the contact details. If your local is not yet listed you can let them know and they will contact them.

http://www.mimitoys.ie/ - Beautiful traditional childrens toys. Nuff said!

http://www.aaireland.ie/ - A great site by AA with a route planner giving you directions anywhere in Ireland. Also has great car safety and insurance advice as well as a members area for travel discounts and the like.

http://www.craftsupplies.ie/ - A great resource for anyone making cards or wedding invitations or into a variety of crafts. Great service, quick delivery and huge selection!

http://www.babysitters.ie/ - another good concept allowing anyone who wants to babysit to advertise for free. Parents can sign up for a subscription read through profiles/references of potential sitters and make contact accordingly.

This is just an idea and some useful sites... you really can do a lot online and life can be much simpler! Hopefully I might have inspired some business owners or individuals to find their place on the web! If not, maybe you have at least found some useful sites! Tell them Deborah sent you! :-)
