100 Books You Can't Live Without?
Sinead over at The Sigla Blog posted yesterday about The Guardian's list of 100 books you can't live without. I am a big fan of such lists and things like it. However this is a rather different concept. Usually it's 100 books you should read before you die or something along those lines, but apparently these are books we can't actually live without? That's a pretty presumptuous claim. However methinks this list is derived from a poll. The fact that Harry Potter is number four on the list makes me wonder if said poll was usurped by primary school children. In fact Harry Potter precedes the Bible. Interesting indeed! The Koran isn't even on the list. Apparently the Harry Potter fans out polled the Muslims as well!
As Sinead also pointed out it's very Austen-centric! There are four Jane Austen books on there, also indicative of a British polling pool. Also of interest is The Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffennegger coming in at number 19. I bought this book a few months ago based on many recommendations, but have yet to get around to reading it. I love thrillers, so am used to moderately decent writing, so when I get a book that I know is going to be more intellectual it tends to end up at the bottom of my pile... more work involved you know? My husband read it too and really enjoyed it, so I think having just finished a James Patterson thriller, it is time to put this one on top.
In terms of book lists I much prefer The Guardian's list of 100 Best Books of All Time. I like going through this list because I have read a substantial portion of it and it makes me feel smart! :-)
Anyways, don't want the foodies out there to feel shortchanged, so here is a really easy smoothie/ice-pop (Popsicle) recipe.
This makes about three smoothies or you can freeze it to make healthy Popsicles for the kids. My toddler loves smoothies frozen or not.
Banana Berry Smoothie
- 1 punnet strawberries
- 2 cups frozen raspberries
- 1 apple, peeled and sliced
- 1 banana, peeled
- 1 cup vanilla/plain yoghurt
To freeze use an ice-pop maker and put a raspberry at the bottom of each cup, top up with smoothie and put the stick in... or if you want to be really creative, layer yoghurt and smoothie mix for a swirled effect. Feel free to add additional ingredients, whatever your brood enjoys!
