Sushi and Ribbons
First of all I would like to thank everyone for the kind words on yesterdays post. It means a lot! I know I shouldn't let this stuff bother me... but what can you do?

It's been quite a day here today. I was making chicken Marsala (not very authentic I'm sure, but damn good, so who cares?) for myself and the girls and the house was smelling wonderful. I went to add the cream at the end and only after I poured it in did I realize it was gone off. I ruined the whole meal! Argh! So the poor kids are getting beans and rice as I didn't feel like walking to the shops. The husband has the car today! *SIGH*
THEN... I was sure it was Tuesday until a few minutes ago when I hopped over to 5 Minutes for Mom for the Tackle it Tuesday code, only to discover it is indeed Wednesday! *SIGH* I suppose I'll post it anyways! I've wanted to make this for a long time and bought the materials a few weeks ago, but have been putting it off. So I set out to turn my husbands ratty old bulletin board from his college days into something still practical, but pretty.

I followed directions from Martha Stewart.com, but I am not nearly the perfectionist she is, so I didn't measure or make "hospital corners" on the back! If it looked good in front then who cares about the back! Anyways, I am happy with it - just need to get it hung - I don't do the hammer thing, will wait for hubs to get home!
Anyways... onto Sushi! My husband loves sushi, me not so much... well that's a lie... let's just say if there was no nori involved I would love it! I just can't stand the texture of the nori. So I have been meaning to make it for him for ages and finally got around to it last night. I was able to pick up some Ahi tuna in Howth, but I wasn't 100% confident about the integrity of the fish, so I ended up searing it just in case. I had asked if it was sushi grade, but the lady was foreign and said yes, but not sure she quite understood what I was asking. I also got some crab when I was there and mixed it with mayo for the rolls. Here's what you'll need to make four crab and tuna sushi rolls (about six pieces in a roll)
- Four sheets Nori

- 2 cups cooked sushi rice
- 2 tbsp sushi vinegar
- Half a cucumber seeded and sliced into long thin strips
- Avocado, peeled, seeded and sliced
- 1 tuna steak (raw if sushi grade, otherwise seared)
- 1/2 cup fresh crab meat
- 2 tbsp mayo
- wasabi paste
- pickled ginger
- Japanese soy sauce
- Sushi mat
So if, like me, you have always wanted to try your hand at sushi - go for it! It was fun... I think it's something that will get a lot easier with practise as well.
